How to Measure Your Wrist for a Bracelet

How to Measure Your Wrist for a Bracelet (And Get the Right Fit)

Buying a bracelet online has one real risk: getting the size wrong. Unlike a chain, which has some flexibility in how it sits on the neck, a bracelet has to fit your wrist specifically. Too tight and it's uncomfortable. Too loose and it slides around constantly.

The good news is that getting the right size is straightforward — if you use the right method. A lot of guides tell you to measure your wrist circumference and then add a "comfort allowance." We don't recommend that approach because it introduces guesswork: how much allowance? Does the clasp affect the measurement? Does the bracelet style change the number?

Our method eliminates all of that. You measure the string at the length you actually want the bracelet to sit on your wrist — and that number is exactly what you order. We handle the rest.

What You'll Need

  • A piece of string, thin rope, or a strip of paper
  • A ruler or measuring tape
  • A pen or marker

  • The Right Way to Measure

Step 1: Wrap the string around your wrist. Take your string and wrap it around the wrist you'll be wearing the bracelet on, at the point where you want it to sit. As you wrap it, give it exactly the amount of slack you want. If you like a bracelet to sit snug with minimal movement, keep it close to the skin. If you prefer it to hang looser and drape slightly, give it that room now.

This step is the key difference from other measuring methods. You're not measuring your bare wrist — you're simulating exactly how you want the bracelet to feel when you're wearing it.

Step 2: Mark the overlap point. With the string sitting exactly how you want the bracelet to fit, use a pen to mark where the string meets itself. Keep your finger on that spot and remove it from your wrist without losing the mark.

Step 3: Measure the string. Lay the string flat next to a ruler. Measure from one end to your pen mark. Write that number down.

That number is your bracelet size. Order that length and you're done.

Why This Method Works for Every Style

You don't need to adjust this measurement based on the style of bracelet or the type of clasp. We account for that on our end.

For example: a handmade Miami Cuban link bracelet with a box lock is measured from tip to tip, but the lock mechanism sits inside itself when closed — so one end is already factored into the stated length. A bracelet with a lobster clasp is measured end to end. Either way, when you order a specific length from us, that's the wearable length you get. Your string measurement maps directly to the length you order, regardless of style.

This means the same method works for:

    • Cuban link bracelets (all sizes)
    • Figaro, Franco, rope, box, curb chain bracelets
    • Baby ID bracelets
    • Bangles and cuff styles

The One Exception: Very Large Handmade Cuban Links (18mm+)

If you're ordering a handmade Miami Cuban link bracelet in the 18mm range or larger, contact us before placing your order rather than relying solely on the string method.

At that width and weight, there are additional factors that affect the right fit — the thickness of the links changes how the bracelet wraps around the wrist, and the weight of the piece affects how it sits. Getting it right is easier with a quick conversation than with a measurement alone.

Already Own a Bracelet That Fits Perfectly?

Skip the string entirely. Open the clasp, lay the bracelet flat, and measure it from end to end if it has a lobster clasp. If it has a box clasp, measure only one end of the clasp. That measurement is your size — order the same length.

What If Your Size Falls Between Our Standard Lengths?

Our bracelets are available in standard half-inch increments (7.0", 7.5", 8.0", etc.). If your measurement comes out to something like 7.75", order the next size up (8.0") and email us your order number with the exact length you need. We'll adjust it for you at no charge.

    Still Not Sure?

If you've measured but you're still unsure — especially on a larger handmade piece — don't guess on a made-to-order bracelet. Reach out before you order:

    • Phone: (813) 888-8590
    • Email: info@lirysjewelry.com
    • In person: Stop by our Tampa store and we'll size you on the spot.

We'd rather spend five minutes helping you get the right size than have you receive a piece that doesn't fit.
