Men's Wedding Ring Guide: How to Choose the Right Band
Most men have never bought a ring before they buy a wedding band. That's completely normal — and it means the process can feel more complicated than it needs to be.
The good news: a men's wedding band is actually one of the more straightforward jewelry purchases you can make. There aren't many variables, and once you understand each one, the decision usually becomes obvious quickly.
This guide covers everything — metal, karat, width, style, sizing, and budget — based on over 35 years of making and selling wedding bands at our Tampa store. We'll also tell you what to avoid, including a few things the industry doesn't like to say out loud.

Step 1: Choose Your Metal
At Liry's, we make men's wedding bands in solid gold and 925 sterling silver. Here's the honest breakdown on each:
Solid Gold
Gold is the standard for wedding bands, and for good reason. It doesn't tarnish, holds its value over time, and is available in three colors — yellow, white, and rose — so you can match it to your partner's ring or your own preference. Gold is also the most durable option for a ring you'll wear every single day for the rest of your life.
We offer gold wedding bands in 10kt, 14kt, and 18kt:
10kt gold contains 41.7% pure gold and is the hardest, most scratch-resistant option. It's an excellent choice for men who work with their hands or lead active lifestyles. Visually, 10kt and 14kt yellow gold are nearly identical — anyone who tells you they can clearly see the difference is likely comparing plated pieces, not solid gold.
14kt gold is the most popular choice in the United States. At 58.3% gold, it balances purity, durability, and price well. If you're not sure which karat to choose, 14kt is the right default.
18kt gold contains 75% pure gold and has a noticeably richer, deeper yellow color than 10kt or 14kt. It's softer than lower karats, which means it can show wear more easily over years of daily use, but it carries the highest gold value and the most distinctive color. Popular for customers who want maximum gold content or a deeper yellow tone.
Sterling Silver
925 sterling silver is a legitimate option for men who want the look of a quality metal band at a significantly lower price point. Silver is bright, clean, and looks excellent as a wedding band. It does require occasional polishing as it tarnishes over time, and it's softer than gold, so it will show wear more readily over years of daily use. For customers on a tighter budget, silver is a real choice — not a compromise.
What We Don't Sell
The original version of this post mentioned tungsten, palladium, and platinum. We don't carry those metals, so we're not going to pretend to guide you through them. What we will say: tungsten and titanium bands cannot be resized or repaired if damaged, and they cannot be cut off in a medical emergency without specialized tools. That's a real consideration for a ring you plan to wear permanently.

Step 2: Choose Your Width
Width is measured in millimeters and is one of the most personal choices in the process. It affects how the ring looks on your hand and how it feels day to day.
4mm–5mm is a slimmer, more understated profile. Works well for men with smaller hands or those who prefer minimal jewelry. Comfortable for all-day wear and easy to forget you're wearing it.
6mm–7mm is the most popular range for men's wedding bands. Our flat comfort fit bands in 5mm and 7mm are our best-sellers — they look substantial without being bulky and wear comfortably through daily activity. If you're not sure what width to choose, start here.
8mm–9mm is a bolder, more prominent band. Makes a stronger visual statement and feels more substantial on the finger. A good choice for men with larger hands or those who want the ring to be noticed.
10mm and above is a statement width. At this size the ring is a focal piece, not just a band. Less common for everyday wear but absolutely a valid personal choice.
A useful rule of thumb: wider bands tend to feel tighter on the finger than narrow ones even at the same ring size, because they cover more surface area. If you're between sizes, size up slightly on a wider band.

Step 3: Choose Your Style
Plain Bands
The classic choice. A flat, smooth band in solid gold or silver. Nothing to snag, nothing to maintain beyond basic cleaning, and a look that never goes out of style. Our flat comfort fit bands are built with a subtle interior bevel — the inside edge is slightly rounded — which makes a significant difference in all-day wearability.
Diamond and Stone Bands
For men who want more visual interest, we offer bands with genuine diamonds, lab diamonds, or CZ stones set into the band. Channel-set designs — where the stones sit flush within the metal — are the most practical for daily wear since there's nothing raised to catch on clothing or equipment.
A few of our popular wedding band styles:
Flat Comfort Fit Band — our simplest and most popular. Clean lines, comfort fit interior, available in 2mm through 9mm widths. Solid gold or silver. The right choice for most men.
Double Grooved Band — a flat band with two parallel grooves cut around the circumference. Adds subtle detail without diamonds. Available with or without stones.
Beveled Edge Band — the edges of the band are angled rather than flat, giving it a slightly more architectural look. Popular with men who want something more distinctive than a plain band.
Carter Ring — a classic band with the option to add genuine diamonds or CZ stones around the edge. One of our most customizable wedding band options.
Channel-Set Stone Band — stones set flush in a channel running around the band. Available with genuine diamonds or CZ. The channel setting protects the stones and keeps the profile clean.
Step 4: Get Your Size Right
This is where most mistakes happen, and it's worth taking seriously because most of our rings are made to order and cannot be resized after production.
Get professionally sized. Don't measure at home with a string or a ring sizer app. Go to a local jeweler and have your finger sized properly. It takes five minutes and eliminates any guesswork.
Tell them the style you're buying. Ring sizers come in different widths, and a wider band fits differently than a narrow one even at the same nominal size. Ask to be sized with a sizer that matches the width of the band you're ordering.
Size the right finger on the right hand. Left ring finger, since that's where you'll wear it. Your dominant hand is typically slightly larger — don't size the wrong hand.
Fingers change size throughout the day. They're slightly larger in the evening and when warm. If you're getting sized in the morning in an air-conditioned store, keep that in mind.
If you order and the size is slightly off, contact us when you receive the ring and send it back. We'll remake it in the correct size.
Step 5: Set a Realistic Budget
Here's our honest take on budget, which is a little different from what most jewelry guides say.
A men's wedding band doesn't need to be expensive to be good. Unlike a diamond engagement ring, the value of a wedding band is in the metal itself — and solid gold or silver at a fair price is solid gold or silver regardless of what you paid.
The average men's wedding band in solid gold runs roughly $300–$800 for most widths in 10kt or 14kt, depending on weight. Wider bands and higher karats cost more because they contain more metal. Diamond bands run higher depending on stone quality and count.
What we'd push back on: the idea that you need to spend a specific dollar amount to get something meaningful. A well-made 10kt gold flat band at $350 is a better ring than a heavily plated, hollow band from a mall store at $600. The metal content and construction matter far more than the brand name or the price tag.
One thing we always recommend: gold is a store of value. If your budget allows, gold is the better long-term choice over silver because you can always sell it or have it remade later. A silver band has minimal resale value. A 14kt gold band always has its metal value, regardless of condition.
What to Expect When Ordering from Liry's
All of our wedding bands are made to order. Production time is approximately 4–6 weeks from order confirmation. We'll contact you if there are any questions about your specifications.
Every ring ships with an appraisal certificate. Our karat guarantee is lifetime — if the metal ever tests differently than what you paid for, we'll make it right. No exceptions.
If you're local to Tampa, come into the store. We'll show you actual pieces, put them on your hand, and give you a straight answer on what looks right. No sales pressure, no upselling — just honest advice from people who've been doing this for three generations.
